THE IMAGE OF THE GENRE
PANIC! AT THE DISCO
The band usually wears very smart clothing which includes waistcoats, suit jackets, dark colours etc. As well as this they also have their hair styled back as well. This can represent the band as professional and that they take their job seriously and like to work hard. It shows that they work at professional level which is very important in the music industry. This style makes the band more unique because the smart clothing subverts over the “punk” music they produce. This helps the band attracts more of an audience which will allow them to become more successful. As well as this, the lead singer, Brendon Urie, predominantly wears no shirt during his concerts. As well as this for the music video Girls/Girls/Boys he is also portrayed to be wearing no clothes at all. This makes him more ‘open’ to his fans which is a good way to connect with his audience. This also shows that the band also has a “fun” side as well in contrast to the smart and professional image that they have. It could also be suggested that they also have a rebellious side as well which converts to the pop punk genre and their audience. This means that the band like to break the rules which converts well with the pop punk industry. It could also be suggested that the lack of clothing and showing of skin would attract more attention, particularly from females, and therefore would grow their fan base.
FALL OUT BOY
The image of this band shows all the members wearing casual clothing; jumpers, jeans and trainers. The colours they usually wear appear to be dark with some forms of bright colours too. This represents the band is very laid back and not “over the top”. It makes the band look like average people which can make them very approachable. This would allow for the fans to relate really well with the band and would easily raise the number of people in their fan base. It can also be said that the band is also “down to earth” and does not let fame get to their head. As well as this the drummer of the band, Andy Hurley, has most of his body covered in tattoos which are very brightly coloured. Not only does it make him bold and unique to other people in the genre but the tattoos help him be identified by others, almost like a symbol. Another example of this is that the lead singer, Patrick Stump. During 2005-2009 he would usually either wear a Castro hat or a baseball cap. However when the band got back together in 2013 after the hiatus, he now wears a fedora and still continues to wear it. These “symbols” are able to make the band more identified to the public. It easily makes them recognised in the industry.
PARAMORE
An important aspect of the bands image is that they make their appearance very bright and colourful. An example of this is that the clothing consists of many different colours which also are very bright. However as well as this they also appear to wear dark colours which contrast really well with the bright ones. The band also wears a mixture of both casual and over the top clothes It can also be seen that the lead singer of the band Hayley Williams, usually has brightly coloured hair and bright and over the top make up. This represents the band to be very fun and creative. Not only does this make the band bold and but it also presents them as fun and creative. It also means that the band can get more attention which allows for their fan base to expand. Their image fits well with the genre as “punk” usually identifies with bright colours, and their different clothing. It could also be suggested that the Hayley Williams wearing bold clothing and colours can represent her as role model to her fans. When it comes to the pop punk genre, most of the bands and singers are males so it is interesting and different to see a female. This again would make the band different from the other bands and would make them appeal more to the females who listen to the genre.
Pop Punk combines both punk rock and pop to create one music genre. This music uses punk rock elements of fast tempo, chord changes and loud guitars. However it also includes pop-influenced melodies and lyrics. Combining the two genres create a whole new genre which is very unique in its own style. Pop punk connotes to rebellion and creative identity which helps attract the target audience which is usually teenagers. I have chosen 3 bands from the genre, Panic! At the Disco, Fall Out Boy and Paramore, and will explain how their image defines them in the genre.
